Legacy Card Database (but not THAT Legacy)

Currently, it is difficult to find out what exactly is or isn’t legal in Middle Class Magic. A searchable database is coming™, but until then, there are four strategies three strategies.

#1) ROUGH SCRYFALL SEARCH

Maybe I shouldn’t use words with unintended political connotations, but…

•• #1A) LIBERAL SCRYFALL SEARCH ••

Immediately above is a “liberal” Scryfall link containing most of – and mostly – the cards legal in the format. The limitations are:

• Cards ILLEGAL due to having been banned are still found there.

• Cards ILLEGAL due to having been upshifted to rare/mythic in a booster set are still found there. (This search for upshifted cards also finds cards that are illegal for other reasons, but you weren’t thinking about playing those anyways, right?)

• Cards LEGAL due to being printed at uncommon in a booster set (other than the Mystery Booster set) AFTER being printed in a nonbooster set (e.g. Commander precons, Planechase) are NOT found there. As of 12/09/2022 (Jumpstart 2022), I believe the complete list of 25 LEGAL cards in this category is as follows:

•• #1B) CONSERVATIVE SCRYFALL SEARCH ••

Immediately above is a “conservative” Scryfall link containing most of – and mostly – the cards legal in the format. The limitations are:

• Cards ILLEGAL due to having been banned are still found there.

• Cards LEGAL due to being printed at uncommon in a booster set (other than the Mystery Booster set) AFTER being printed in a nonbooster set (e.g. Commander precons, Planechase) are NOT found there. As of 12/09/2022 (Jumpstart 2022), I believe the complete list of 25 LEGAL cards in this category is as follows:

• Cards LEGAL due to having been upshifted only in nonbooster sets are NOT found there. As of 9/14/2022, I believe the complete list of 119 LEGAL cards in this category is as follows:

#2) PROCESS OF ELIMINATION

Immediately above is a Scryfall link containing every uncommon that is NOT legal in the format. You can search it to see if a card is legal or not: if it appears, you can’t play it in MCM. (This might actually still be 100% accurate as of 12/09/2022.)

For example, if you want to see what cards with “fire” in their name are illegal, you can add “name:fire” to the search criteria. You’ll see that Fire//Ice is illegal, despite originally being an uncommon, because it was upshifted to rare in MH2. You’ll see that Fireball is illegal, despite having been an uncommon, because it was originally common in LEA. And you’ll see that Firewing Phoenix is illegal, since it was a rare in M13. And now you know that Chandra’s Spitfire and Fire Servant (among many other “fire” cards) are both legal, since neither was there! Hurray!

#3) A BIG LIST I MADE

7,079 lines of raw, uncensored text. Alternately, here’s a .csv of all MCM-legal cards in their most recent printings that you can download and search for all kinds of everything. I believe these are both 100% accurate and I’m honestly a little tired of proofing it right now. 🙁

For example, if you’re looking for dredge cards (o:dredge), you’ll see Moldervine Cloak (illegal due to MMA) but not Golgari Thug (legal because SLD is ignored).
